Integrated LED or replaceable bulb: what changes in maintenance
Buying and maintenance guide
Think ahead to the next replacement
Choosing between an integrated LED and a replaceable bulb affects the initial purchase, your options for changing the light and future maintenance. An accessible bulb lets you keep the lamp when that component fails. With an integrated fitting, the solution depends on the design, available spare parts and who can carry out the work.
Actual view of wall light 20000. Its LED light source is integrated; no user-replacement procedure is documented.
To decide, compare models that meet the same need. An adjustable reading wall light and an ambient wall light may use different systems because they serve different purposes. First define how you will use it; then check what would happen if it needed a repair.
01What choosing an integrated LED means
The light source is part of the fitting's design, which can allow compact bodies and optics tailored to the assembly. The term “integrated LED” does not, by itself, indicate whether the module is replaceable. Nor does it confirm that the whole fitting must be discarded when it stops working.
It is worth distinguishing two components: the module that emits light and the driver or equipment that powers it. Their replacement options may differ. Article 4 of European Regulation 2019/2020 provides for information on the replaceability of light sources and their control gear, indicating whether replacement is for users or qualified personnel. Check this information for the specific model.
02The flexibility of a replaceable bulb
When the fault is in the bulb and the rest remains in good condition, a replacement lets you continue using the lamp body. You can also choose light characteristics from among compatible bulbs. This flexibility is useful if you want to try a different colour temperature without changing the fitting.
The cap is only one part of compatibility. Check dimensions, voltage, maximum permitted wattage and operating conditions. A bulb that connects correctly may be too large for its housing. If you want dimming, also verify compatibility between the bulb, fitting and dimmer.
03Buying and maintenance: the key differences
Purchase and maintenance considerations
What to check
Integrated LED
Replaceable bulb
Initial purchase
The light source is part of the unit.
Check whether bulbs are included and how many it needs.
Changing the light
Depends on the functions and components provided for the model.
Allows you to choose from compatible replacements.
If a fault occurs
Identify the affected component and whether it can be replaced.
A new bulb only resolves faults in the bulb itself.
Access
May require disassembly and professional work.
Check how to remove the bulb and the available space.
Future replacement
May require a specific part reference.
Confirm the format and limits, even with the same cap.
04Four questions to ask before choosing
1. Which part can be replaced, and who replaces it?
Look for an explicit statement covering the light source and power supply. For example, the Philips Ledinaire Panel instructions reserve certain replacements for the manufacturer, its service agent or a qualified person. That is a condition for those products; check the instructions for the fitting you buy.
2. Is a replacement part identified?
Ask for the part reference and find out how to obtain it. Being able to remove a component does not guarantee that you will find a compatible replacement years later. If you are installing several identical fittings, knowing how to obtain assistance helps you plan maintenance.
3. How much work does access require?
A wall light beside a bedside table and a fitting on a high ceiling present different access challenges. Consider the part cost, the work involved and any necessary disassembly. The purchase price alone does not represent the full cost of use.
4. Which documents should you keep?
Keep the invoice, model reference, variant and instructions. If a fault occurs, first check the warranty coverage and appropriate service provider. An estimated service life does not mean indefinite operation or replace the warranty conditions.
05Catalogue examples: wall lights and a spotlight
The 20000 reading wall light has a 2.5 W, 220 lm, 4000 K LED, an adjustable head and USB-A. It does not require a separately purchased bulb and is not dimmable. Its documentation does not describe a user procedure for replacing the LED: any future repair must be discussed for that model.
The 20024 natural rattan wall light uses one replaceable E14 bulb rated up to 15 W, sold separately. Its woven shade lets light pass through the gaps for a decorative effect. It has a plug-in cable with an inline switch and is rated IP20 for dry indoor use. Before buying, check the bulb dimensions and make sure a suitable power socket is available.
The 20091 recessed spotlight provides another example: it has an integrated LED and an included LIFUD driver, stated to be replaceable by a professional. The service procedure is not available. Its pull-out head does not mean the LED is removable by the user.
For directed reading light, check adjustability and placement; for ambient light, consider how the wall is illuminated. The choice of maintenance system accompanies that decision. You can compare more indoor wall lights using the same criteria.
06Models to compare the two options
A selection from the catalogue relevant to this decision. Check the product information and variant before buying; photographs do not replace a drawing or confirm compatibility.
Useful for comparing directed reading light with an integrated LED. No separate bulb is needed; it is not dimmable and user replacement of the LED is not documented. Check placement and access to the control.
An example of decorative lighting with one replaceable E14 bulb rated up to 15 W, sold separately. Plug-in cable with an inline switch; IP20, for dry indoor use. Check the bulb dimensions and do not force the weave to reach the lampholder.
An example with a stated 36° beam and an adjustable head for accent lighting. A pull-out head does not mean a replaceable LED. Check the cut-out, depth and direction; dimming is not supported.
I have defined whether I need reading, ambient or general lighting.
I know whether the light source is included and how many bulbs I need to buy.
I have checked compatibility, access and dimming where needed.
I know what maintenance the model allows and whom to consult.
I have allowed space for installation and access for future work.
08Your questions about replacements answered
If an integrated LED fails, does everything need replacing?
It depends on the fitting and the fault. Confirm which components can be replaced and whether a spare is available before deciding.
Is a replaceable bulb always cheaper?
There is no universal answer. Compare the fitting, initial bulbs, replacements and maintenance work over the intended period of use.
Can I replace the driver myself?
Follow the instructions. If the task requires electrical work or qualified personnel, use a professional. Do not work on the equipment while it is live.
Can I fit any bulb with the same cap?
Also check dimensions, voltage, permitted wattage and compatibility with the fitting and its controls.
Does an integrated LED mean I can dim the light?
Only if the model states that it supports dimming and a compatible control is used. Wall light 20000, for example, is not dimmable.
