Recessed or surface-mounted downlights: choosing the mounting type

To choose between a recessed or surface-mounted downlight, start with the ceiling: a recessed model needs a suitable cavity, while a surface-mounted model leaves its body visible below the mounting surface. Then compare the fixings, maintenance access and the light you need. A square or round shape and the wattage alone do not answer those questions.

Recessed or surface-mounted: differences that matter when buying

Recessed mounting places most of the body inside the ceiling, with the front trim finishing the opening. Surface mounting can be an alternative when there is not enough ceiling void, provided the mounting surface and connection allow that installation.

Mounting comparison for choosing an LED downlight
What to compare Recessed Surface-mounted
Space required Opening, depth and installation clearances Visible height and space planned for the connection
Key measurement Permitted cut-out, which differs from the front trim Base, fixing points and overall height
Fixing Mounting surface compatible with the clips or specified system Anchors suitable for the ceiling and weight
Future replacement Keep a compatible cut-out or adapt the opening Check fixings, footprint and cable entry
Finish Front trim close to the ceiling plane Visible body projecting from the ceiling

What to check before buying a recessed downlight

The opening and front trim have different measurements

If you are replacing a light fitting, note the actual shape and dimensions of the hole. Compare them with the cut-out specified for the new model, rather than its outer width. A front trim that covers the edge does not guarantee that the body will fit or that the fixings will work correctly.

Check the condition around the opening. Damaged board, an uneven cut-out or an oversized opening may require a repair or a specific accessory. Do not assume the clips will compensate for any difference, and do not enlarge the hole before confirming the model.

Installation depth involves more than the body

Check the available void, any framing or obstructions and the space needed for the driver and connectors. The driver is the LED power supply when the design uses a separate unit. A front-view photograph does not tell you how much space the complete assembly takes up.

Follow the manufacturer's requirements for clearances, ventilation and contact with insulation. Do not choose a model advertised as slim on the assumption that it will fit between any ceiling and structural slab. If the drawing or installation depth is missing, request those details before buying.

What to check on a surface-mounted downlight

Measure how far it will project and check the opening clearance of cupboard doors, access panels and other nearby elements. Also consider how it will look from the room entrance: the external body will be part of the finish.

Locate the electrical supply point and the fixing supports. The base can only house connections if it is designed to do so. If you plan to cover an old hole, verify that the anchors will grip sound material; covering the opening does not prove that the fitting can be secured there.

Calculate the full cost: light fitting, compatible accessories, fixings, labour and any repairs. Surface mounting may avoid a large cut-out, but it does not necessarily eliminate drilling or wiring work.

Choosing the mounting type does not replace choosing the light

Once you have established that the fitting will fit, compare luminous flux, colour temperature, light distribution and dimming if you need it. Two units with the same wattage can produce different results. Do not decide how many fittings a room needs from its floor area alone: height, finishes and activities all matter.

The guide to LED spotlight beam angles helps explain light distribution. To assess future replacements, also see integrated LEDs or replaceable bulbs. The diffuser and mounting type alone do not guarantee freedom from glare.

Practical example: replacing a square downlight

Imagine a kitchen with a square opening and an old light fitting. You can compare the 20 W square recessed downlight with the 20 W square surface-mounted downlight. Those details appear in the catalogue; they do not confirm that the models are interchangeable.

  1. Gather a photograph of the ceiling, the old model reference and the opening measurements.
  2. For the recessed model, check the cut-out, depth and condition of the mounting surface.
  3. For surface mounting, check the support, fixings, connection and coverage of the opening.
  4. Choose the light variant and check how many units the pack contains.

If neither option fits without adapting the ceiling, ask the installer to assess the alteration before ordering. If you are actually looking for a large panel with a frame, see how to choose a surface-mount kit for an LED panel.

Checklist before ordering

  • Ceiling type, opening and available space checked.
  • Cut-out drawing or fixings for the chosen model reviewed.
  • Driver, connections and maintenance access planned.
  • The model's operating conditions and protection are suitable for its location.
  • Light, dimming, accessories and pack quantity confirmed.

Installation must be carried out by qualified personnel, with the power disconnected and absence of voltage verified, following the product instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert any recessed downlight to surface mounting?

Only when the manufacturer provides for that mounting method or specifies a compatible accessory. The LEDVANCE downlight technical catalogue documents options for specific ranges; that compatibility does not extend to other models.

Does surface mounting mean installing without holes?

Not necessarily. It may avoid the opening needed to house the body, but appropriate fixings and a cable entry are still required.

Which option is easier to maintain?

It depends on how the fitting and its power supply are removed. Check the actual access and keep the model reference and instructions.

Can I reuse the old driver?

Only with explicitly confirmed compatibility. The same wattage or a similar connector is not enough to select the new fitting's power supply.

What should I do if I do not have the ceiling measurements?

Obtain those measurements with the installer's help before choosing. Then compare LedsCome LED downlights with the requirements you have noted.
