How to choose an LED strip and the components it needs

To choose an LED strip, plan to buy the complete system: strip, power supply, controls if needed, support and end fittings. The voltage or LED count in the name is not enough to decide. First define the route and effect you want; then request compatible product references for that specific project.

Start with a sketch and a purpose

Measure each section separately and mark corners, interruptions and distances to the planned power supply location. State whether you want indirect decorative light, illumination of a surface or a visible line integrated into furniture. Also explain where it will be viewed from: a shelf at eye level deserves a visual test.

Allow access for inspecting and replacing components. Before closing a suspended ceiling or commissioning furniture, agree where the power supply and controller will go when the system uses them. Include those locations in your enquiry, even if the installer will resolve the electrical design later.

Which components to compare

The LEDVANCE system configurator organises the selection into modules, power supply, connections and mounting elements, and produces a materials list. You can apply that approach to organising your purchase without assuming that its accessories work with every brand.

Component list for planning an LED strip system
Component What to confirm before buying
Strip Voltage, wattage per metre, light, width, length and permitted application
Power supply Required type, capacity and operating conditions
Control Compatible functions, channels, capacity and remote control
Profile and diffuser Dimensions, intended support and appearance of the line of light
Connections and end fittings Product references, quantities and protection of the finished assembly

Fixed white, tunable white or colour

Write down the functions you will actually use: simple on/off operation, dimming, white adjustment or colour scenes. With that list, ask for a suitable strip and its controls to be identified. Not all products offer the same functions or use the same configuration.

For lighting clothes, decorative objects or products, include colour rendering, or CRIin the comparison. If you want to coordinate the strip with spotlights, also think about which part of the scene each illuminates; the beam angle guide helps compare their beams.

Reel length and permitted run length are different figures

Check how much material the product includes, the length the configuration allows and how it can be adapted to your planned measurements. Cutting intervals are also model-specific. Do not assume that the whole reel can be used as one continuous section in any installation.

The LEDVANCE technical systems catalogue shows how permitted length depends on the model and power supply route. Its tables must not be applied to other products. Request a proposal that accounts for actual distances, rather than only the metres of strip.

Calculation example to prepare your enquiry

Suppose there are two sections of 2.4 and 1.6 metres: together they total 4 metres. If a hypothetical strip specifies 10 W per metre, the nominal wattage of those sections would be 40 W. This is a calculation example, not a specification of the featured products or a power supply recommendation.

The final selection must consider the configuration, controller limits and equipment conditions. Ask for sizing based on the manufacturer's documentation; adding a generic percentage margin does not replace those checks.

Low-voltage and mains-voltage ranges

A 12 V strip and one marketed for 220 V AC use different approaches. Confirm the power supply and accessories required for each model. As an example of comprehensive documentation, LEDVANCE publishes a specific mains-voltage range with its own conditions and safety warnings.

Those details do not describe LedsCome strips. For mains-voltage systems, have qualified personnel make the connections. This guide helps prepare the selection and does not provide electrical installation instructions.

Profile, finish and protection of the assembly

Confirm the profile's usable width, space for end fittings and supported diffuser. Request a sample of the assembly if a uniform-looking line matters: appearance cannot be determined from the strip photograph alone.

The protection stated for a strip also does not automatically establish the protection of its joints, power supply or controller. Describe the location conditions and request a suitable complete solution. Keep the instructions and accessory references for future repairs.

Checklist before ordering

  • Sketch showing measurements of every section and accessible equipment locations.
  • Lighting function and control method defined.
  • Package contents and included metres confirmed.
  • Power supply, controls and accessories identified by product reference.
  • Length limits and suitability for the route checked.
  • Profile, diffuser and end fittings included in the quotation.

Two catalogue ranges to start your enquiry

The LED STRIP 12V 120LED IP65 and LED STRIP 220V AC IP65 references illustrate two ranges. Before choosing, request their specifications: the available information does not detail length, wattage per metre, controls or package contents. They do not form a mutually compatible system.

Frequently asked questions about LED strips

Does the strip include a power supply?

It depends on the product reference. Ask for the exact package contents and confirm the required power supply; do not infer from the photograph that it is a kit.

Can I cut a strip to any length?

Any adaptation must follow the cutting increments and conditions specified for that model. Check them before finalising the furniture or profile measurements.

Will any remote control dim it?

No. Confirm that the strip supports the function and that the power supply, controller and remote form a documented combination.

Does IP65 mean the entire installation has that protection?

Not automatically. The system's different components and end fittings must be checked, along with their suitability for the intended location.

Can I extend the length later?

Only within the configuration's limits. If you anticipate an extension, mention it when preparing the materials list so it can be considered from the outset.
